Then a few years later I had the opportunity to see it live in Denver. It was so magical getting to see them perform it right there in front of me. I will always remember the way Elphaba flew up in the sky while she was singing "Defying Gravity" and the vibrant colors of the set during the song "One Short Day". And then the end where Elphaba and Glinda sang their duet of "For Good" I nearly started crying. It is a moment I will never forget.
But last night I saw Idina Menzel in concert, and it came really close to the moment of seeing Wicked live. She opened her show with "Defying Gravity" and I just about cried. It was so beautiful. She was the original. The one who gave life to Elphaba. The one who made the character work. She went on to sing some classic favorites from some of her broadway idols like "Don't Rain on My Parade." She sang "Take me or Leave me" from Rent and of course "Let it go." But by far my favorite moment was hearing her sing "Defying Gravity. Her voice is so powerful and she brings so much life and meaning to that song. As I sat there hearing her sing this song, I thought about every moment in my life when I was told that I wasn't good enough, or I couldn't do something. And I was reminded of how courageous and resiliant I am and how Idina Menzel has helped me remember that. It was a beautiful night.
And I was too far away to get a good video, but I recorded some of her singing "Defying Gravity". It took me a minute to get my phone out so I didn't get the start of it.
