Now of course student teaching would not be as fun without a little bit of fun and surprises. It has been snowing here since I arrived on Monday. Not a lot of snow, only a few inches. This is almost nothing compared to what I have witnessed growing up in Colorado. I mean Denver has had blizzards with several feet of snow! But for this area it is a lot. Today (Friday) I awoke to more snow as I have every morning this week. I was getting ready for school rushing about my house (despite waking up early). I went out to warm up my car and then ran back inside to gather a few things. When I went back outside to scrape my windshield my neighbor yelled "Hey! No school today" I couldn't hear what he said so I said "What?" He said again "I just got word that there is no school today." I told him I hand't know, thanked him, turned off my car, and went back inside my house. I really do feel like I am living in a small town. This is the kind of thing you see in a movie. People living in a small town alert each other of news and things like school closures. I also want to put it out there that I live in a "neighborhood" that is comprised of six houses, three on each side of the street. Across the way there is another tiny cluster of houses and that is it for 20 minutes before you hit the tribal park, grocery store and school. I just thought you might like to know that. So when I sat my neighbor I am referring to the person that lives right next door to me, although everyone in my house cluster could be considered neighbors. Now back to the story. I don't have wifi at my house (because it is such a remote area and the connection is hit or miss) so I couldn't check on the district website to be sure, but after a call to my mentor teacher, it was verified that school was indeed closed. Apparently power had gone out by the school last night and only been restored this morning. There is also only one road that leads to the school, and my guess is that that road was pretty snowy which would have made it hard to drive on. I end up making it to the school this afternoon (and how I am writing this post) in order to do a little bit of work on the computer.
Since I don't have wifi at my house I been getting creative in what I can do at home. I have started reading a really good book that I purchased at the store several months ago (and I have a few more for when I finish this one). I have also begun writing my second book which I am really excited about, and at the rate I am writing right now I just might have it finished by the end of this spring. Haha. I also have been doing some art (painting, and visual journaling) and playing my new found addiction of solitaire on my tablet. I would like to try my hand at some new recipes in the kitchen, so perhaps this is what I will do next.
So my adventure is off to a fun start! I will hit the ground running again next week at school with more fun in store, but hopefully not another snow day! I would prefer to be in the classroom teaching rather than stuck at home. But we shall see!
Check back for another update shortly! I also hope to begin sharing some photos once I can get the internet set up on my tablet at the school!
