Here are some of the reasons Monsters University is one of the best movies ever:
First of all, it portrays college in such a real way. I was in the middle of my college experience when this movie came out, and many of the aspects of this movie hit home. From being nervous to meet your roommate, to trying to fit in, to making friends. These are all things that you go through in college and they showed them in a real way.
It shows different personalities of people in college. You have Mike who is a determined and hard working monster who studies hard to achieve his dream of becoming a scarer. Then you have Sully who is lazy and thinks he can coast through college on his family name and become a scarer. It is easy to make comparisons as you watch the movie.
It emphasizes the important of being different. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Sully is made at Mike and doesn't think their team can win the scare games. Mike takes the team on a field trip to visit the Monsters Inc scare factory. They look down into the factory and see all of these scarers of different shapes, sizes and abilities, all scaring. Mike asks the team what they all have in common. They all say nothing. And Mike says exactly. There is not just one thing that makes you a good scarer. Each monster uses their differences to their abilities. This is great advice that can be translated into life.
It shows why working as a team is important, and when you put your differences together, you can do amazing thing. When the whole Ozzma Kappa team came together to win the scare games, their abilities shined through.
The main characters don't win right away. In a lot of movies, the main characters try to achieve a goal, there are some speed bumps, but eventually fate brings everything back together so they win. Like the hockey team that loses their final championship game. But then it's discovered the other team cheated. So in they win. In this movie, they didn't do that. Mike and Sully get kicked out of the scare program, then they are given a second chance if they can win the scare games. They come close to being eliminated several times in there but don't and they end up making it to the finals. They "win" the finals until Sully confesses he cheated and both him and Mike are kicked out of the scare program. I like that they don't achieve there goal right away. They have to work hard to get it. Work in the mail room, then as janitors and so on and so for before they actually become scarers. This shows that hard-work, courage and determination will help you achieve your goals, not just luck.
